“Who said we don’t have strong candidates? There are Bhuvneshwar and Aiden and with Mayank coming in, we have a solid leadership group. We will see how it goes in Ranji for Mayank and then take a call on the captaincy,” an SRH official told InsideSport.

Who will be the new skipper for Sunrisers Hyderabad? Despite signing Mayank Agarwal, SRH coach Brian Lara remained uncommitted over the appointment of a new skipper. Mayank Agarwal has experience leading a team. The Indian opener led Punjab Kings last year but was sacked and subsequently released. However, his numbers declined sharply at Punjab as captain. Whether SRH will take the risk of the same remains to be seen. Aiden Markram and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are also options for the franchise.
“I think that’s unfair to say. We have got a couple of senior players around the squad already. Personally, I think he has leadership qualities, but so do have other players in the squad. That is a decision we haven’t taken as yet and with the auction not being over, we are not sure yet of the remaining players we will have,” Brian Lara said after the auction.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is SRH’s designated vice-captain. But with injuries and age not on his as a bowler, SRH may think otherwise. Bhuvneshwar has led in Kane Williamson’s absence previously. The veteran pacer is also familiar. He knows everything about the functionality of the team.

The 28-year-old Aiden Markram is another captaincy option for SRH. The South African scored 381 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 139.05 last season. As he is the pillar of SRH’s middle order, he is the favourite contender. The only roadblock for him is the lack of leadership experience. He is however likely to become the skipper of their SA20 franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Hence, SRH can back him to be the next captain.
