Novak Djokovic displaced Carlos Alcaraz from the top spot in the ATP Rankings on Monday. Just 14 days ago, Djokovic lost the top spot to the Spanish teenager, who won the Indian Wells Masters 2023 title. Alcaraz had to win the Miami Open as well to retain his No.1 spot. However he bowed out from the semifinals and eventually slipped down to the second spot in the rankings.

While the battle for the top spot was expected to resume in the Monte Carlo Masters between Alcaraz and Djokovic, the Spaniard pulled out citing a hand injury. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal has also retired from the tournment as he has not yet recovered from the hip injury that he sustained at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Daniil Medvedev, who recently won the Miami Open will be the third seed. Tsitsipas has won the last two editions of the Monte Carlo titles. He is now eyeing third successive win in the tournament. Medvedev meanwhile has show terrific form in the tour so far winning four of the last five tournaments.

Djokovic has already reached Monaco and has begun practice sessions on the clay courts. He was last seen in action at the Dubai Tennis Championships where he bowed out from the semifinal after losing to Daniil Medvedev.
