Novak Djokovic vs Grigor Dimitrov
Top seed Novak Djokovic began his title defence at the Italian Open with a straight set win against Tomas Etcheverry. Djokovic appearaed rusty in the first set as he had to win it after playing the tie-breaker. However he found his groove as he went on to seal a 7-6, 6-2 win in the contest. He will aim to continue his form as he takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.
Dimitrov is the 26th seed and he began the campaign in the second round. He faced Stan Wawrinka and sailed past the Swiss with a 6-4, 7-6 victory. Dimitrov met Djokovic earlier this year at the Australian Open and lost the contest in straight sets. Djokovic will yet again be the favourite in the upcoming contest.
Holger Rune vs Fabio Fognini
After clinching a straight set win in his first-ever match in Rome, Holger Rune will face local favourite Fabio Fognini in the third round contest at the Italian Open. 20-year old Rune met a younger opponent in 18-year old Arthur Fils in the second round and sealed a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Meanwhile, Fabio Fognini made his return to the Italian Open after missing out Monte Carlo Masters and Madrid Open due to a foot injury. The Italian began his campaign in Italy with a three-set victory against Andy Murray. He then sailed past 30th seed Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 7-6 to make it to the third round. With the crowd behind him, he will look to continue his show against Rune in the upcoming contest.
Casper Ruud vs Alexander Bublk
Fourth seed Casper Ruud began his campaign in Italy on a dominating fashion. He sailed past Arthur Rinderknech in the second round with a 6-4, 6-0 victory. In the third round he is set to face Alexander Bublik. Ruud is hoping to carry over his form and make a deep run in the tournament.
Alexander Bublik meanwhile began his campaign with a straight set win against Pedro Martinez. In the second round, he faced 28th seed Ben Shelton. Against the higher-ranked American, he clinched a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win to book spot in his maiden third round contest at the Italian Open in his career. Bublik trails 1-4 in the head-to-head record against Ruud.
