Taipei Open Highlights: HS Prannoy enters quarterfinal, Kashyap, Tanya Hemnath lose

Taipei Open Highlights: Third seed HS Prannoy made it to the quarterfinal at the Taipei Open 2023 on Thursday, 22nd June 2023. He defeated Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto 21-9, 21-17 in the second round. Meanwhile, Parupalli Kashya, Tanya Hemnath and India’s Mixed Doubles pair Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy bowed out from the second round of the Taipei Open 2023. Kashyap lost 16-21, 17-21 against Su Li Yang. Tanya Hemnath suffered 11-21, 6-21 defeat against top seed Tai Tzu Ying. Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy meanwhile faced a 13-21, 18-21 loss against Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Lin Xiao Min.

Parupalli Kashyap vs Su Li Yang

Parupalli Kashyap began the contest with an early lead against Su Li Yang. He was leading 7-5 in the first game. However with six straight points, Yang took the lead and entered the interval. After the interval, Yang continued to maintain his upperhand in the contest as he comfortably sealed the first game 21-16.

In the second game too, Su Li Yang began with a 5-1 lead. Trailing 3-8, Kashyap soon took the next four points and managed to reduce the deficit. A net-error from Yang helped him level the scores 10-10. However Kashyap squandered an opportunity to take the lead as he made a net-error that made him enter the interval with a one-point deficit.

Neck-to-neck battle ensued between both the players after the interval. From 16-16, Yang managed to inch ahead by two points. Trailing, Kashyap hit a shot wide that gave the game point to his opponent. Yang soon clinched the contest after Kahsypa misjudged a leave at the baseline.

HS Prannoy vs Tommy Sugiarto

Third seed HS Prannoy was at his dominating best against Tommy Sugiarto. With the win he won his third straight contest against the Indonesian and takes his head-to-head record to 3-0.

The first game was completely an one-sided affair. Prannoy with seven points on the trot took a massive 8-1 lead to start the proceedings. With a smash, he entered the interval with the scores at 11-2.

The dominance continued from Prannoy’s end. With a drop shot, he got to the game point with the score at 20-6. He duly clinched the first game with a cross-court smash.

In the second game, Sugiarto gave a good fight at the start. He took a big 8-2 lead. He was aiming to enter the interval with a massive lead at 10-3. However Prannoy fought back and took four successive points to reduce the difference. However a long shot from the Indian helped Sugiarto get to the interval with a four-point lead.

Prannoy came back strong after the interval. Trailing 12-15, he took four points on the trot and grabbed the lead for the first time in the game. At 17-17, Sugiarto tried for a smash and hit wide. Prannoy utilised the opportunity and with his serve, he pickd up the next four points to win the game 21-17 and booked a spot in the quarterfinal.

Women’s Singles

Tanya Hemnath vs Tai Tzi Ying

Tanya Hemnath initially led the contest 3-2. However she soon fell behind after a wide shot. Tai Tzu Yi Ying soon took four successive points to get to a big lead. She entered the interval with the score at 11-6.

A net-error from Tai Tzu Ying followed by a winner from Tanya Hemnath helped her reduce the deficit to 8-11. Tai Tzu Ying however bagged the next five points to go up 16-8. She then went on to win the first game 21-11.

In the second game, Tai Tzu Ying began with a massive 7-0 lead. There was no chance for Hemnath to make a comeback as the Taiwanese showed heer class. She entered the interval wit a 11-3 lead and allowed the Indian to score just three more points as she sealed a dominating win.

India’s Mixed Doubles pair Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy were completely outplayed by Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Lin Xiao Min.
