Swiss Open Badminton Highlights: Defending champion PV Sindhu bowed out from the second round at Swiss Open 2023. She lost against Indonesia’ Putri Kusuma Wardhini on Thursday, 23rd March 2023. Earlier, World No.9 HS Prannoy bowed out from the tournament. He lost 8-21, 8-21 in the second round against France’s Christo Popov. Kidambi Srikanth and Mithun Manjunath also lost their respective second round matches. They suffered straight game defeats against Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu and Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia-Hao respectively. Men’s Doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy are the only Indians to clinch victory on the day. They defeated Lee Fang-Chih/Lee Fang-jen in three games to enter the quarterfinals. Kidambi Srikanth vs Lee Cheuk Yiu
Kidambi Srikanth’s campaign at the Swiss Open Badminton has come to an end. He suffered a straight set defeat against Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in the second round.
Srikanth started off the match on a positive note. He took lead early in the first game. Cheuk Yiu fought back and Srikanth still managed to enter the mid-game interval with a one-point lead.
After the interval, the neck-on-neck battle ensued but Srikanth took the lead and had three match points with the scores at 20-17. Cheuk Yiu didn’t give up and made a terrific comeback in the contest as he took the next five points on the trot to seal the first game.
In the second game, Cheuk Yiu took control right from the start. He entered the interval with a five-point lead. After the break, Srikanth managed to make a comeback as he took a 11-10 lead. Cheuk Yiu however didn’t let the Indian take control and soon regained the lead. He went on to seal the match 22-20, 21-17 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
HS Prannoy vs Christo Popov
India’s top ranked player HS Prannoy looked a pale shadow of himself as he made a second-round exit from the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament. He went down in straight games against unseeded Christo Popov of France. World No. 40 Popov as he failed to give any fight, losing 8-21, 8-21 to bow out of the men’s singles event.
Women’s Singles
PV Sindhu vs Putri Kusuma Wardhini
In the Women’s Singles, PV Sindhu went down in three games against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardhini. After losing the first set 15-21, she cam back in the second game and clinched a comfortable 21-12 win. However in the final game. The Indonesian yet again dominated and went on to win the match.
In the Men’s Doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lee Fang-Chih and Lee Fang-jen in a hard-forught game to make it to the quarterfinals.
