On a sluggish surface, Karthik Meiyappan posed some difficult questions to the Sri Lankan batters in his first three overs. However, the 22-year-old upped his game and ran through the Asian champions’ middle order, with a stunning hat trick.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa was the first to be dismissed as he tried to clear the offside fence. Meiyappan slowed down his pace meaning the left-hander could not get the timing nor the distance to hand a simple catch to Kashif Daud. New batter Asalanka also dismissed the first ball after he failed to pick the googly, and keeper Vriitya Aravind took a sharp catch.

Meiyappan however saved his best for the last, with a well-disguised googly disrupting the stumps of Srilanka skipper Dasun Shanaka. The all-rounder played for the leg spinner but was completely bamboozled by the wrong ‘un, completing his hat trick. The moment sparked wild celebrations from Karthik and his teammates in what is a crowning moment for the 22-year-old.
