Earlier on Day 2, Cameron Green (77) and Alex Carey (45) batted strong to take Australia to strong position against host Sri Lanka.
On a rain curtailed day, Sri Lanka fought back as Ramesh Mendis bagged four wickets. But Australia still managed to nose ahead with Pat Cummins playing a brisk knock before the day closed.
Australia ended the day 2 with 313/8 at stumps with Cummins unbeaten on 26 and Nathan Lyon on 8.
