SL Squad India Series: Nuwanidu Fernando: IND vs SL – Sri Lanka have announced the squad for the white-ball tour to India starting January 3, 2023. Nuwanidu Fernando has earned a maiden call-up, while Chamika Karunaratne is recalled to the squad despite imposing ban. Karunaratne and Fernando’s inclusion in the squad comes after an impressive show in the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL). Apart from Karunaratne, Pramod Madushanka, Nuwan Thushara, and Jeffrey Vandersay are also back in the squad. Bhanuka Rajapaksa is included only in the T20 squad, just as Vandersay and Thushara have been.

IND vs SL: Will Chamika Karunaratne get to play a game against India despite imposing a ban?
- Karunaratne was banned by SLC for one year after breaching the contract. The all-rounder was also alleged of undisciplined misconduct during T20 World Cup.
- No official announcement has come about Karunaratne’s ban being eased.
- The all-rounder performed well in LPL for Kandy Falcons and was their top wicket-taker.
- SLC will take a call on Karunaratne’s inclusion in the team by next week.
- Nuwanidu Fernando made to the Lankan team on back of a superb show in LPL, scoring 113 runs at a strike rate of 140.
With two deputies announced, SLC are keen to groom future leaders. While Shanka is set to continue to be the leader of the 50-over format till World Cup in 2023, the all-rounder’s T20 leadership is under threat owing to Hasaranga’s stellar show in the T20 format. The three-match T20 series against India could be the last chance for Shanka to show his form and leadership credentials.
Hasaranga has done well as a leader of the side for Falcons in LPL. The all-rounder also shares a warm equation with players and gets along with the majority of them unlike, Shanka, who has come under the scanner in recent times of not gelling with players.
