SL beat WI 2nd Test Highlights: Embuldeniya & Mendis star as Sri Lanka register 164-run victory over West Indies to complete whitewash

Off-spinner Mendis completed his second five-wicket haul to finish with 11 wickets in the match as Sri Lanka completed a 2-0 series win against the Caribbean side to pick up the full 24 points on offer in the World Test Championship.

Sri Lanka, who were all out for 204 in the first innings, declared their second innings closed at 345 for nine early on the fifth day, setting the tourists a target of 297 to try and win the match and level the series.

While the target seemed out of reach on a track assisting the spinners, a draw did not seem unlikely when West Indies reached 65 for one.

But Mendis and Embuldeniya then ran through the batting lineup to bundle them out for 132 in the second session as West Indies lost their last eight wickets for 40 runs.

Mendis, 26, took his tally to 18 wickets in the two Tests to pick up the player of the series award.

Embuldeniya finished with seven wickets across the two innings as the Sri Lankan spinners took all 20 West Indies wickets to fall in the match.

Dhananjaya de Silva was adjudged the player of the match for his unbeaten 155 in Sri Lanka’s second innings.

Sri Lanka had ended day three on 46/2, trailing by 3 runs but De Silva made sure the hosts walk away with a big lead on Thursday.

On Wednesday, West Indies started the day at 69-1 and progressed to 145-2 at lunch. They batted well to add 76 runs in the morning session, losing only one wicket against Sri Lanka’s spin bowlers on a turning pitch.

Brathwaite was 62 at the interval, after positing his 23rd Test half-century. He added 10 more after the interval when he was bowled by Lasith Embuldeniya on Day Three.

Brathwaite faced 185 balls and batted for close to 4 1/2 hours but his dismissal with the score at 166-3 led to a collapse as West Indies were folded for 253 in the first innings.

Sri Lanka then on Thursday made sure to have a significant lead over the visitors as De Silva batted 259 balls to take hosts to 328/8.

With Angelo Mathews out with a hamstring injury, losing two early wickets was a massive blow for Sri Lanka. They have never lost a home Test to West Indies.

Earlier, off-spinner Mendis belatedly found his line and length, dismissing Nkrumah Bonner to end his 75-run stand with West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite. It broke a two-session drought for Mendis, who then ran through the tourists’ middle order, ending with figures of 6-70 as the West Indies were all out for 253 after tea with a lead of 49.

Earlier, Veersammy Permaul chipped in with a fine five-wicket haul and forced Sri Lanka to collapse on Day 2, getting bowled out cheaply for just 204.

For Sri Lanka, Pathu Nissanka top-scored for the hosts with a fine 73, and was ably supported by captain Dimuth Karunratne, but the rest of the side failed to put on any resistance as they crumbled in the first session.

Veerasammy Permaul’s five-wicket haul put Sri Lanka in trouble with the West Indies batting openers already chasing down the hosts’ lead by early tea on day two of the second Test in Galle on Tuesday.

Rain interrupted play half an hour before the scheduled break in a match that has been plagued by inclement weather and bad light, with the tourists trailing by 135.
Permaul’s first long-format match in six years helped bowl out Sri Lanka for 204 on the second day with a career-best 5-35.

The West Indies’ decision to play two left-arm spin specialists proved a masterstroke against a side heavy with right-handed batters.

Permaul and fellow left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, who claimed 4-50, cut through the Sri Lankan order on a wicket with plenty of turn and bounce. It was the fourth time in history that West Indies spinners claimed all 10 wickets in an innings. Off-spinner Roston Chase had claimed captain Dimuth Karunaratne on day one with Sri Lanka resuming overnight on 113.
