The only attacker in Madrid’s starting lineup along with five midfielders, 22-year-old Rodrygo fared quite fine on his own. After missing a clear chance to score early on, Rodrygo expressed some displeasure with Ancelotti for switching him out for the defender Nacho with 20 minutes remaining in the game to help preserve the advantage.
Bryan Gil’s first shot, which hit a Madrid defender and dropped to the striker in the box, was completed by Rafa Mir to give the hosts the lead in the third minute. With a free kick that he fired around the side of the defensive wall and beyond custodian Yassine Bounou, Rodrygo equalised in the 29th minute.
In the 36th minute, Érik Lamela nearly gave Sevilla the lead back as he struck the post. After receiving a pass from Toni Kroos on a counterattack, Rodrygo scored his second goal in the 69th minute by gliding past defender Gonzalo Montiel and beating Bounou.
Marcos Ocua of Sevilla received a direct red card in the 84th minute for a studs-first challenge on Dani Ceballos. With one game remaining, the victory put Madrid in second position and Sevilla in tenth. Three rounds ago, Barcelona clinched the championship.
Seven clubs are fighting for relegation, while the other nine games in this last round will be played concurrently on Sunday.
