Just ahead of the 2022 US Open, the former world No 1 announced that she would be “evolving away from tennis” following the tournament and failed to use the word ‘retirement’. She bowed out of the tournament after losing in the third round and bid an emotional farewell.

Six months after featuring in the game, Speaking to CBS Morning, Serena said, “I definitely am evolving. Because I feel like when you retire, it’s different. When you retire, you put up your gloves or your club or your racket or whatever that is and then you just relax. And you go and you just basically take life in. And that’s not what I’m doing.”

However when asked whether she has plans to make a comeback, Serena said, “It’s hard to say, I would say no. For now, no. I’ve literally given my whole life to tennis and it’s time for me to give my life to something else”

Williams went on to add that she feels pain seeing her old photos of winning championships. “I feel more pain looking at old pictures. I feel like’ Oh I miss that’.That’s when I feel different. But when I look at the court, “I feel relief. I feel like I am so happy I don’t have to train for two hours today.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion also revealed that she feels not happy with the result of her last competitive match. She lost to Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5 6-7(4) 6-1 in the third round of the US Open in the final Grand Slam of last season. “I was actually not very happy at all, Just because of the result. I was there to keep going and to keep winning. Yeah, it was more or less like, ‘I can’t believe I let that match go’ more than anything, you know.”

Williams is currently focussing on her venture capital firm Serena Ventures. It is focused on funding founders with diverse backgrounds. “Winning to me now is just to pick out the best deals to invest in, you know. We need people like me. We need women writing the cheques, because I really am a big believer in like attracts like,” she concluded.

Williams’ 23 Grand Slam wins is the second most by any player in the history of Tennis. She decided to end her career just behind Margaret Court’s tally of 24 Grand Slam wins. She has lifted seven titles each in Australian Open and Wimbledon, while she has also won 6 US Open titles and 3 titles in French Open.
