In the 2022 edition of the Cup, the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy champions Saurashtra are set to host the Rest of India in Rajkot from October 1 to 5.
In Irani Cup, the current Ranji Trophy champions take on the Rest of India squad in a one-off Test match.
Saurashtra defeated Bengal in the Ranji final thanks to their first-inning lead In March 2020. The Irani Cup match that the winners were scheduled to play was postponed a week later owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In India, the virus was still at large, hence the 2020–21 domestic cricket season did not feature any red-ball matches. After that, Madhya Pradesh won the Ranji Trophy after defeating Mumbai by six wickets in the final in June of the 2021–22 cricket season.
The BCCI has now provided Saurashtra with an opportunity to compete with the top first-class players in the nation.
Meanwhile, it is yet not known when MP, the current Ranji champions, will be able to compete in the Irani Cup.
The most recent Irani Cup competition took place in Nagpur in February 2019. In that contest, Vidarbha defeated the Rest of India thanks to their first-innings lead.
