Meghalaya, who had never before advanced to the Santosh Trophy semifinal, extended their legendary run in the National Football Championship (NFC) on Wednesday (March 1) when they stunned Punjab 2-1 after coming back from a goal down. Punjab took the lead on goal from Deepak Kumar (16′), but Meghalaya answered with goals from Figo Syndal (37′) and Sheen Stevenson Sohktung (90+1′) to advance to their first final.
In Group B, which also featured West Bengal, the most successful team in the league, past champions Railways, Manipur, and Delhi, Meghalaya earlier finished second to Services. In the last round of the group round, Meghalaya defeated West Bengal, Manipur, and Delhi while drawing with Railways and losing to Services.

In the second semifinal, Robin Yadav (42′), Ankit P (45+1′), and Sunil Kumar (77′) scored goals for Karnataka to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat favourites Services 3-1. For Services, Bikash Jadhav scored the lone goal in the 40th minute.
In contrast, Karnataka came in second place to Punjab in Group A, which also contained the former season’s champions Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, and the hosts of the championship game, Odisha. Karnataka won against Kerala and Goa, drew with Odisha, Maharashtra, and Punjab, and went undefeated in the final round group stage.
