Rishabh Pant has faced immense criticism from various corners following his mediocre returns during ongoing India vs South Africa. His manner of dismissals, particularly in the 2nd innings of the Wanderers Test irked the fans after he perished trying to smack Kagiso Rabada of just his 3rd ball at the crease.
In his press conference, skipper Virat Kohli discussed Pant’s shot selection and claimed the team management have had a conversation with him. Kohli said, “We did have a conversation with Rishabh Pant during practice and when a batter plays a bad shot, he would know more than anybody if he has played the right shot according to the situation and as long as an individual accepts that, he will make progress. We have all made mistakes in our career in important situations where we have got out, due to pressure or whatever the situation was.”
The Indian captain then proceeded to offer Rishabh Pant some advice, coming straight from his idol and former captain MS Dhoni. Kohli said, “I remember MS Dhoni once telling me that there should be a 6-7 months gap between your two mistakes. That is how you will progress in your international career. That became a part of my system. So reflecting on your mistakes is important and I know Rishabh does that and he will learn from his mistakes.”

Rishabh Pant’s tendency to go for the glory shot has hampered India in recent times, with the Indian wicketkeeper having meagre returns since the World Test Championship final in June. While Pant has chipped in with cameos in the meantime, he has lacked the patience to play the long innings and get his team into a commanding position. With the Cape Town test being a series decider, Pant will be itching to set the record straight and perhaps invoke the fine memories of his Gabba heroics from last year.
