For the unversed, Madhwal was the net bowler for RCB in 2021. The pacer did not a get to play a game for RCB. Madhwal also went unsold in 2022 mega auctions, and only came as a replacement player for Suryakumar Yadav.
“He (Akash) was part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra (Archer) was gone, and I knew he had skills and the character to do the job for us,” Rohit said during the post-match presentation.

MI were dealt with severe injury blows in IPL 2023, first with Bumrah being ruled out due to back injury, and later Archer being out due to elbow issues. Madhwal was a net bowler last season and did not get even one game to play. However, what the pacer did was practice in the nets,hone his yorker skills, and wait for his opportunity.
“I was just practicing and waiting for this opportunity. I did my engineering and played tennis-ball cricket since it was my passion. Engineers have a tendency to learn quickly,” he said with a sheepish grin.
“I just practice, and that is what we execute. I’m proud of myself, but I’ll try to be better.”
When the 30-year-old was quizzed about filling Bumrah’s shoes, Madhwal responded in a humble manner by saying, “Bunrah has a special place in the MI team, and now can replace him.”
“Bumrah bhai has his own place, and I’m just trying to play my role. Nicholas Pooran was the best wicket. Everyone at home believes I’m working hard.”

MI’s thumping 81-run win have enabled them to play Qualify 2. They will take on GT the on Friday (May 26). GT lost the Qualifier one to CSK by 15 runs. The winner of GT vs MI will meet CSK in the summit clash on May 28.
