He has been elected as a member of parliament of the upper house Rajya Sabha. He took his oath on Monday, beginning his six-year tenure. As per BCCI’s ratified constitution, no public servant can hold post. An announcement is likely at the BCCI Apex Council Meeting on Thursday. As per the constitution, Shukla ji has to step down. We haven’t had a chance to discuss this as most of the office bearers were in England. Shukla ji was also busy with his Rajya Sabha commitments. We will have a chance to discuss this at the Apex Council meeting. But can’t say when he will make the announcement,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

What does BCCI’s Constitution say?

As per Rule 7.2, “The Vice-President shall officiate in the President’s absence, when the President is unavailable; The Vice-President shall exercise such functions and duties as he may be empowered with by the General Body or the Apex Council.”

The President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer have been designated as office-bearers of the BCCI.The constitution also prevents any office bearers to continue as BCCI official if they assume any role as a public servant. It was specifically designed to prevent politicians to assume office in the BCCI.

Rajeev Shukla to STEP DOWN: Why does he need to step down?

  • AS per BCCI’s constitution adopted after recommendations from the Lodha Committee, no government or public servant can hold BCCI office.
  • As per BCCI’s constitution, President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer have been designated as office-bearers.
  • “A person shall be disqualified from being an Office-Bearer, a member of the Governing Council or any committee or any similar organisation if he or she… is a Minister or Government Servant or holds a public office,” the BCCI constitution states.
  • Hence, as he has taken oath as Rajya Sabha MP, he will have to step down from the BCCI.
  • An announcement is likely to be made on July 21 at the BCCI Apex Council Meeting in Mumbai.
  • Shukla is also a member of the BCCI Apex Council.
