Race to World Cup 2023: How does Sanju Samson fare in ODIs against top guns?

Race to World Cup 2023: How does Sanju Samson fare in ODIs against top guns?

After being snubbed in the Asia Cup, will Sanju Samson find himself missing out on the upcoming ODI World Cup as well? Check out how the batter has fared in ODIs since its debut in 2021.

Sanju Samson is often considered to be one of the most talented batters in white-ball cricket. Despite having an excellent record in ODIs, Samson finds himself at odds with the Indian management. Having played just 13 matches since his debut in July 2021, Samson has made the most of his limited opportunities.

Does Sanju Samson have a case to be India’s best batter in the last two years?

Since 2021, Samson has been India’s second-best batter in terms of average (55.7). Only opening sensation Shubman Gill comes close to him in terms of scoring more runs per inning than him (69.4).

The right-hander has managed to eclipse stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul when it comes to prowess with the bat in the last couple of years.

In his two years as an ODI cricketer, Sanju Samson has racked up 390 runs in 12 innings and strikes the ball at a quickfire pace of 104.

The right-hander has batted in four different positions (from number 3 to 6) and has still managed to score three fifties.

When compared with Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, his main competitors in the middle order, Samson is miles ahead in the numbers game.

Similar to Samson, Surya has batted at different positions (from number 3 to 7). However, he averages just 24.3 in comparison to Samson’s average of 55.7 in double the number of matches (26).

Meanwhile, Kishan has played 10 matches at the number three and four spots, averaging just 29.8.

Given his overall performance and form of late, Sanju Samson might feel like he’s been undone by not getting picked up in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023. However, the batter’s consistent performance might just help him find a place in India’s squad for the World Cup 2023.
