PSG’s LEGAL threat force Chelsea to PULL out of Manuel Ugarte Transfer Race

After discovering Chelsea's desperation, PSG threatens the possibility of UEFA sanctions to compel the Premier League club to withdraw from the Manuel Ugarte transfer race.

Manuel Ugarte Transfer: After overcoming Premier League team Chelsea , Paris Saint-Germain anticipates concluding the signing of Uruguayan international Manuel Ugarte from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon. Ugarte, 22, is about to finalise his transfer to Paris after the French champions used the central midfielder’s €60 million (£51.8 million; $64.1 million) release clause. On Monday afternoon, he got his checkup.

At first glance, the transaction for Ugarte’s transfer seemed uncomplicated. However, it became precarious over the weekend as Chelsea, a prominent Premier League team, fiercely vied for Ugarte’s signature.

Reports from various sources, starting with the French newspaper L’Equipe, surfaced, stating that Chelsea, who had also met the player’s release clause, was offering to cover the additional costs associated with the transfer.

Furthermore, there were discussions regarding Chelsea potentially acquiring a minority stake in Sporting, the Portuguese club where Ugarte currently played, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. As a result, the future of the deal between the three clubs appeared uncertain.

Sources close to the negotiation between Sporting and Chelsea have refuted claims that Chelsea was interested in acquiring a stake in Sporting as part of the transfer deal for Ugarte. They denied any ongoing discussions regarding such matters. However, PSG grew concerned about the media reports and drafted a legal letter expressing their worries.

PSG’s draft letter raised concerns about the “integrity” of the proposed transfer to Chelsea, primarily focusing on the potential challenges it could present in UEFA club competitions. According to UEFA regulations, clubs are prohibited from holding shares in or having management control over another participating club in any of their three competitions: the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League.

In the upcoming season, Chelsea did not qualify for any UEFA competition due to their lower position in the Premier League. On the other hand, Sporting’s fourth-place finish in Portugal ensures their participation in the 2023-24 Europa League. However, considering that both clubs have a history of regular European participation, it is highly likely that they will eventually compete in the same tournament in the near future.

The draft letter from PSG also promised to take all required steps within the regulatory framework to protect the interests of both PSG and Ugarte. It then requested Sporting to provide a detailed explanation of any investments involving Chelsea as a club or any individuals connected to the ownership group of the Premier League side. The letter concluded by cautioning that if Sporting failed to provide a satisfactory response within 24 hours, the matter would be escalated to UEFA, the governing body of European football.
