Manchester United’s Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault
As per the latest reports, Mason Greenwood has been released from police custody on bail with further investigations pending. “A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation,” said Greater Manchester Police.
In a statement, Manchester United wrote: “Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind. As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice.”
The 20-year-old striker was indefinitely suspended from Man Utd after his arrest.
Manchester Police spokesman has confirmed that the force were granted more time to quiz the footballer.
“Detectives have been granted further additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman,” he said as quoted by The Sun.
“The suspect was detained in custody on Sunday afternoon after we became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. Following enquiries so far, he has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill,” he added.
Meanwhile, Greenwood’s name was removed from Manchester United’s squad on FIFA 22 and squad list from the club. The club official partner Cadbury said Greenwood won’t appear on any marketing products.
Sportswear giant Nike has also suspended their sponsorship with the star.
“We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood. We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” it read.
In a more damaging cause, several teammates have unfollowed him on social media.
A spokesman for the club said: “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”
The allegations were released on social media on Sunday and included video, photographs, and a voice note claimed to be a conversation between Greenwood and the woman.
“Greater Manchester Police was made aware earlier (Sunday, January 30) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement as per Sky Sports.
“An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing,” stated further.
