The 49-year-old resigned as the manager of the Belgium team following the Qatar World Cup. Belgium had failed to qualify for the knockout stage. Santos during his tenure had led Portugal to the 2016 European Championship title and the inaugural UEFA Nations League title in 2019. Speaking at the new conference on appointing Roberto Martinez as Portugal’s head coach, FPF President Fernando Gomes said, “I appreciate the enthusiasm and ambition with which he (Martinez) received the invitation, This is an important moment for the national team”.

Roberto Martinez confirmed as Portugal’s new manager
Martinez had said that he had made the decision to end his six-year tenure some time ago. He added that had Belgium world champions he would have still left the team. In his six year tenure Martinez took Belgium to number one in the world rankings and also guided them to third place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Martinez during his unveiling ceremony seemed excited about the new challenge. Speaking to the media he said, “ I’m very happy to be here, I’m delighted to be able to represent one of the most talented teams in the world. the project I wanted. I understand that there are high expectations and goals, but I also understand that there is a large group of people working to fulfill our goals”.

He added,“ The important thing is that we are a very competitive team. When I think about my international career, in six and a half years we have been undefeated in 28 games for major tournaments. It is a way of making the team competitive. Portugal must always have the will to win everything and for that you need to be a modern team, with tactical flexibility.”

What does Roberto Martinez’s appointment mean for Cristiano Ronaldo?
The former Belgium manager Martinez is known to get the best out of young players. With the kind of talent that Portugal has currently, Ronaldo has an uncertain future with the national team. The Portugal legend was benched for the last two World matches after showing displeasure over being substituted by former coach Fernando Santos. With the new coach known for working with young talents, Ronaldo would find it hard to break into the starting XI. While the future of the Al Nassr forward hangs in balance it will be interesting to see whether he finds a place in Martinez’s plans.
