Almost a month before the IPL 2024 auction, teams have made strategic releases and retentions to increase their purse. These changes in the squad have also tinkered with team combinations, and one way to maintain them is to rebuy players. This tactic is a fickle one, but at a mini-auction, it can work wonders for franchises. With the retention and release window closed on November 26, these are the expensive players that IPL franchises may rebuy at the IPL 2024 auction.

Players franchises might rebuy at the IPL 2024 Auction
- Wanindu Hasaranga: the injury-prone Sri Lankan leg-spinner, has been out of action since August, and his return date is still uncertain. Taking this into account, RCB decided to release him. However, the franchise can buy the spinner back for a much lower price, given his current fitness status.
- Harry Brook: An expensive buy that did not fare well for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Brooks’ inability to play spin saw him end his debut season with an average of 21.11 and a strike of 123.38. Given that his price tag was ₹ 13.25 crore, SRH may look to rebuy him at a lower price.
- Harshal Patel: Another expensive player released by RCB, the pacer bowler’s performance dipped in 2023. His price tag of ₹ 10.75 crore did not justify his spot in the squad. However, much like in 2022, he can be re-brought, this time at a lower price.
- Shahrukh Khan: The bits-and-pieces all-rounder is known for his hitting acumen and his part-time off-spin. However, the Punjab Kings felt that ₹ 9 crore was too rich for a player for them. With money in the bank, PBKS can bring back Shahrukh at a much lower price.
- Lockie Ferguson: The Kiwi quick was out of touch in 2023. He bowled just 46 balls and picked up just one wicket at an economy of 12.52 last season. After his performance in the World Cup 2023, KKR might look to get him back at a reduced price from his original ₹ 10 crore.
- Shardul Thakur: Similar to Lockie, Shardul also failed to deliver on his ₹ 10.75 crore price tag. The all-rounder has not been impressive with the bat or ball in hand in his time with KKR. However, with an increased auction purse, Shardul might just make a return.
