After Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid in La Liga, Torres uploaded a story where we could see Aubameyang back at Barcelona supporting his former teammates. He left for Chelsea from Camp Nou in a £10 m deal between the two clubs just 12 months back but hasn’t quite made the impact that he would have liked.

Following Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal, the striker rapidly fell down the pecking order and has since only played 123 minutes of football without starting a single game this year. He was also axed from Graham Potter’s Champions League squad after the West Londoners’ January spending spree. Barca tried to sign him in the winter transfer window but it didn’t pan out.

Barcelona’s interest in Aubameyang

Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo, likes the notion of bringing the 33-year-old back to the Nou Camp as a “low cost option” in light of their financial difficulties. The Gabon striker still has a really good relationship with the Blaugrana stars, especially Ousmane Dembele, with whom he also shared a dressing room in Borussia Dortmund.

Even Xavi is someone who is quite keen on the idea of Auba returning to Spotify Camp Nou. Even though the ex-Arsenal star just was in Barcelona for around 6 months, his contribution was immense in helping Barca qualify for the Champions League. He netted 13 goals in 24 appearances for the Blaugrana.

Xavi also appreciates his versatility as he can play as a winger and a centre-forward. Barcelona has struggled all season to find a suitable player to play on the LW for them, with Dembele and Raphinha more comfortable on the right. Fati and Torres too haven’t quite made the LW position their own.

The Catalan giants tried to sign Aubameyang in January but LaLiga regulations blocked a potential deal. A summer deal would be more likely as Chelsea will be looking to raise funds after a busy winter window. The Blues are also in danger of missing out on the Champions League, which will be a kick to their revenue for the season. Also, with Christopher Nkunku most likely joining Chelsea, this move makes the most sense for all parties.
