Soon after the news broke out of Pele’s death, Neymar Jr took to Instagram to pay a rich tribute to the departed Brazilian legend. Pele had a big role to play in Neymar’s rise, with both having played for the same club Santos. Incidentally, Neymar equalled Pele’s record number of goals for Brazil during the 2022 World Cup.
In a touching note, Neymar wrote, “Before Pelé, 10 was just a number. I’ve read this phrase somewhere, at some point in my life. But this sentence, beautiful, is incomplete. I would say before Pelé football was just a sport. Pelé has changed it all. He turned football into art, into entertainment He gave voice to the poor, to the blacks and especially: He gave visibility to Brazil. Soccer and Brazil have raised their status thanks to the King! He’s gone but his magic remains. Pelé is FOREVER!!”

Earlier in December, Neymar had collected the Player of the History award on Pele’s behalf. The Brazilian legend is the only player to win three World Cup titles and has the most wins in World Cup history to his name. He was also the leading goal scorer in football history, only to be surpassed by Cristiano Ronaldo recently.
“As you know, Pelé is part of my history. King, our affection and respect for you will be eternal,” declared Neymar holding the gold-plated trophy marked with the octogenarian star’s name.
