Three FIFA World Cups ( 1958, 1962 & 1970)
Three times—back-to-back in 1958 and 1962, and then for the final time in 1970—Pelé won the FIFA World Cup. Brazil, which has five victories on the biggest football stage, became the first country to win the FIFA World Cup in 1958. He has more World Cup victories as a player than any other player in history. It is one of Pelé’s several Guinness World Records as a result. There are 21 players in all who have won the competition more than once, including Pelé. There are four Italians and one Argentine on that coveted list, while 16 of them are Brazilians.

In at least 659 games for Santos, where he spent over two decades of his career from 1956 to 1974, Pelé scored 643 “official” goals. Technically, that is just under one goal every game. Since then, no one has amassed as many goals for the Brazilian team as Pelé. He won two Copa Libertadores, two Intercontinental Cups, and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (or Braziliro, as it is more commonly known) with Santos.
As a result of his 643 goals, Pelé held the record for the most goals scored by a single club in football history for 46 years, until Argentine great Lionel Messi surpassed him on December 22, 2020, with his 644th goal while playing for La Liga team Barcelona. With 77 goals from 92 games, Pelé continues to hold the record for the most goals scored by a Brazilian for the Brazil national team.
Youngest Player to win FIFA World Cup:
When Brazil faced Wales in the quarterfinal of the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden, Pelé scored his first goal at the age of just 17 years and 239 days. He becomes the youngest player to ever score in a World Cup match. Ten days later, on June 28, 1958, Pelé’s exploits helped Brazil defeat Sweden in the championship game. At the age of 17 years and 249 days, he achieved an unrivalled Guinness World Record by becoming the youngest player to win the World Cup.
Youngest player to score a hattrick in FIFA World Cup:
The 1958 version did in fact make Pelé a household name. At the age of 17 years and 244 days, he broke the record for the youngest player to ever score a hat-trick in a World Cup match. His triple-double occurred on June 24 against France in the semifinal game. Brazil eliminated France 5-2 with three goals in the second half.

Youngest player to play and score in a FIFA World Cup final:
Following up on his incredible performance in the semifinal, Pelé scored twice against Sweden in the championship game. He was the youngest player to ever play in a FIFA World Cup final just by virtue of his participation in the game. He became the youngest player to ever score in a FIFA World Cup final thanks to his goals as well. All of the records are still valid. Curiously, Pelé is the only player ever to score in a World Cup final before reaching 18 years old.
Most Career Goals
FIFA and Guinness World Records both recognize Pelé as the player with the most career goals. However, there is disagreement over the precise sum. Guinness records show that Pelé scored 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, including friendly games, club amateur competitions, games at the reserve team level, and junior national competitions.
He scored 1,281 goals in the same number of games, according to FIFA and CONMEBOL, the South American football federation. In March 2021, ESPN was informed by Santos club historian Odir Cunha that Pelé had a career goal total of 1,282 goals. However, Pelé asserts that he has 1,283 goals in his career. Along with being a great goal scorer, Pelé was an excellent field general. He also holds the record for the most assists in a single World Cup, which occurred in Mexico in 1970. In addition to his own four goals, Pelé had six assists. Over 100 goals in two calendar years
FIFA has acknowledged Pelé as having 110 goals in 1961 and 127 goals in a calendar year in 1959. On July 13, 2022, the governing body’s official Twitter account posted a message congratulating itself on reaching the milestone of 127 goals. It’s unclear if Pelé now holds the record for the most goals scored in a single year.
Messi holds the record for most goals scored in a calendar year with 91, according to Guinness World Records. The Zambian Football Association stated in the same year that Godfrey Chitalu, its outstanding player, scored 107 goals for club and country in 1972.
Player of the Century award by FIFA
16 years after winning the FIFA Order of Merit, FIFA awarded him the Player of the Century in 2000 (an honour he shared with Diego Maradona). He received the Ballon d’Or Prix d’Honneur in 2013. He was prohibited from being transferred internationally after the Brazilian government formally designated him a national treasure in 1961.
Olympic Order
At the Pele museum in Santos in November, 2016, Brazilian football hero Pele was awarded with an Olympic order, the highest honour bestowed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Pele made light of the fact that his country’s football team had yet to take home an Olympic gold medal because he had never participated in the event. Due to the then-law that professional sportsmen were not allowed to compete in the Olympics, Pele was already named the IOC’s “Athlete of the Century” in 1999 despite never having participated in the games.
