24-year old Osaka, started 2022 by reaching the semi-finals of the Melbourne Summer Series 1. She however couldn’t play the semis as she suffered an abdominal injury. She then entered the Australian Open as the defending champion. After defeating Camila Osorio and Madison Brengle in straight sets in the first two matches, she suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Amanda Anisimova in the third round. Her early exit made her slip down the rankings.
Sloane Stephens however is having a good year so far as she won her first WTA title in four years by defeating Marie Bouzkova to claim the Abierto Akron Zapopan crown last week. Stephens is looking to continue her good run this year. She started the year with a first round defeat to Emma Raducanu at the Australian Open. The Indian Wells Masters is her third tournament this year.

Speaking after her title, she said, “It’s the beginning of the season, so there’s still a lot of tennis to be played, but I’m excited to be able to put some matches together. Excited that I was able to do that, get a title, and hopefully continue on with that momentum.”
