“I’m sad to announce that I won’t be able to compete and defend my title this year at the Madrid Open. I would like to wish everyone and the tournament a great event.”

Jabeur, who was on a seven-match winning run after recovering from injury and surgery earlier this year, was to face Romania’s Ana Bogdan or Hungary’s Anna Bondar in the second round of the clay tournament in Madrid.

The Madrid Open will be played from Tuesday through May 7.

Preparation for French Open 2023

Prior to missing the Madrid Open 2023, Jabeur was enjoying a great clay court season. Her first tournament of the season was Charleston Open 2023 which she won without dropped a set all week and defeating Swiss top 10 player Belinda Bencic in the final. Jabeur was on a 7 match winning streak but an untimely injury has caused her severe problems for her French Open contention.

Up next for her is the Rome Master which starts from May 9 and Roland Garros beginning from May 28.
