‘More consistent’: Fearless duo Satwik-Chirag ready to fulfill their Paris Olympics dream

Fearless duo Satwik-Chirag tched their names in history as India’s first-ever World No. 1s, having clinched numerous prestigious titles along the way.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who were then ranked as the top duo in men’s doubles worldwide, were gearing up for the Olympics with high hopes of securing a medal. Since their partnership began at the Polish Open in 2016, the pair had navigated through various challenges with resilience and determination. They had faced criticism on Twitter urging them to split, battled injuries, managed their contrasting personalities and food preferences, and even dealt with disagreements over court positioning.

Despite these obstacles, they had etched their names in history as India’s first-ever World No. 1s, having clinched numerous prestigious titles along the way. Their journey had not only been about achieving success on the badminton court but also about nurturing a strong and enduring friendship, evident in their synchronized dance celebrations after victories.

Satwik-Chirag reach World No1 ranking

Reflecting on what the World No. 1 ranking had signified to them, Shetty had expressed satisfaction and had acknowledged the significance of consistency in achieving this milestone. He had emphasized the importance of challenging conventional notions and aspirations, emphasizing that Indians were equally capable of excelling on the global stage.

Ten years back, no one would’ve thought it possible for Indians. But it was always a dream to be World No. 1. Titles are of course more important, but this just shows consistency. A lot of people on the circuit have said they never expected an Indian pairing to be No. 1 and win titles. But we can’t be satisfied even if it’s 10 weeks of completing No. 1. But we should question, Why not Indians? We don’t lack physicality, we just need ability and it’s possible to be the world’s best.” said Chirag Shetty to Indian Express.

Rankireddy had shared Shetty’s sentiments but had emphasized the importance of maintaining their top position and striving for continual improvement and success. He had acknowledged the occasional setbacks but had remained focused on their goal of winning tournaments consistently.

Being World No. 1 is pretty cool. But it’s normal, I’m happy, but we want to stay on that rank longer. c. We want to always win tournaments. But 100 per cent wins don’t happen, here and there we fall short. And then I get low.” added Satwiksairaj.

India’s sure shot hope for gold at Olympics

As they had prepared for the Olympics, the duo had prioritized injury prevention and physical well-being. Shetty had underscored the importance of staying injury-free and minimizing the number of tournaments they participated in to ensure peak performance during key events like the Thomas Cup and selected other competitions.

“Do’s are to stay injury-free and take care of the body. Don’ts is to not play in too many tournaments, so it will just be Thomas Cup, and any 2 of the 4 tournaments later”. added Shetty

Rankireddy had echoed Shetty’s sentiments, emphasizing the need to avoid injuries and adhere to a strict injury prevention routine to maintain their fitness levels at their peak. They had been fully committed to their Olympic aspirations and had been determined to give their best performance on the global stage.

“We have only Don’ts – Not to get injured. Nor to do stupid things like suddenly go out and play cricket. Follow the injury prevention routine and be as fit as possible.” said Rankireddy.
