Hurdler Jyothi Yarraji’s Paris Olympics preparations get major boost with overseas training camp in Spain

Yarraji kicked off 2024 with a victory in the women's 60m hurdles at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran

Hurdler Jyothi Yarraji’s request for an overseas training camp got the green light from the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ (MYAS) Mission Olympic Cell (MOC). Yarraji, India’s national record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, clinched gold at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok and silver at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.

She kicked off 2024 with a victory in the women’s 60m hurdles at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran. With her sights set on the Paris 2024 Olympics, she aims to maintain her momentum. Ranked 23rd in the Road to Paris list for the women’s 100m hurdles, Yarraji plans to train in Tenerife for 45 days, with MOC covering her expenses under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy receive green light as well

Additionally, badminton players Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy received approval to spar against international opponents before the Paris Olympics. The world’s top-ranked men’s doubles team will train against Scottish pair Alexander Dunn and Adam Hall in Mumbai, then face Indonesian pair Rain Agung and Berry Agriawan in Hyderabad.

Indian shooters Raiza Dhillon and Rajeshwari Kumari also had their training plans endorsed. While Dhillon will train in Italy with her coach, Rajeshwari will receive coaching from David Kostelecky in Italy. Furthermore, Rajeshwari’s request for equipment upgrade, funded by TOPS, was approved. Para shooters Rahul Jakhar and Rubina Francis are set to compete in the upcoming WSPS World Cup in Changwon, Republic of Korea, with financial assistance from the sports ministry.
