Archery WC: India upset Olympic champions Korea to bag historic gold after 14 years

This phenomenal performance by Indian archers across categories signifies a bright future for the sport in the country. With focus, determination, and exceptional talent, the Indian archery team is poised for even greater achievements in the years to come.

The Indian men’s recurve archery team etched their names in history books on Sunday, defeating the mighty South Korea to win the gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai. This victory marks a significant milestone for Indian archery, breaking a 14-year jinx and boosting their qualification chances for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Team India Archery dominant display

The Indian trio of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, and Pravin Jadhav displayed nerves of steel throughout the competition. They faced their arch-rivals, South Korea, who boasted two members of their Tokyo Olympics gold medal-winning team, in the finals.

Undeterred, the Indian team displayed exceptional composure, matching the Koreans in the first set (57-all) and putting immense pressure on their opponents. Their focus and precision shone through as they secured the subsequent sets with scores of 57-55 and 55-53, clinching a convincing 5-1 victory.

Building on Past Success

This triumph holds immense significance for Indian archery. It marks the first time the men’s recurve team has defeated South Korea in a World Cup final. It also echoes the success of the women’s team, who had previously defeated Korea twice in the 2013 World Cup. This victory serves as a testament to the growing strength and consistent performance of Indian archers on the world stage.

Paris Olympic Dreams in Sight

The win not only adds a prestigious gold medal to India’s tally but also bolsters their chances of securing Olympic berths. India has already secured one individual spot through Dhiraj.

With the final Olympic qualifying event approaching in June, India’s strong performance and current third-place ranking in the world rankings position them well to claim additional team berths for Paris.
