Paris Olympics dreams on hold: Bajrang Punia suspended for skipping dope test

With the clock ticking towards the Paris Olympics, Bajrang Punia finds himself in a precarious position. His decision in the coming days will determine whether he can clear his name and continue his fight for a place on the Paris Olympic stage.

Indian wrestling star Bajrang Punia’s bid to compete at the Paris Olympics has suffered a massive setback after he was provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for refusing to submit a urine sample during selection trials in March.

Bajrang Punia missed sample

NADA’s suspension letter, dated April 23rd, prohibits Bajrang Punia from participating in any wrestling competition until a final decision is reached at a hearing. This throws his participation in the upcoming selection trials, scheduled for next month, into serious doubt.

Securing a quota spot in the 65kg category is crucial for Punia’s Paris Olympic dreams, and with no Indian wrestler yet qualifying, his absence creates a major hurdle.

A Procedural Dispute?

The situation is further complicated by Deepak Punia’s earlier claims regarding expired dope testing kits. He had raised concerns about the equipment used by NADA officials, but according to reports, he refused to give a sample despite not receiving a response to his complaint.

The dope control officer’s report states that Punia left the venue after reiterating his concerns, despite warnings about potential consequences.

Time Running Out for Explanation

NADA has requested a written explanation from Punia by May 7th, along with any supporting documents for his refusal. He faces two options: accept the consequences and forego a disciplinary hearing, or contest the charges and have his case reviewed by an anti-doping panel.

Crucial Decision Looms

With the clock ticking towards the Paris Olympics, Bajrang Punia finds himself in a precarious position. His decision in the coming days will determine whether he can clear his name and continue his fight for a place on the Paris Olympic stage.
