Lauren Down and Katey Martin stitched together a partnership of 76 runs for the seventh wicket as New Zealand sprung a fantastic turnaround to defeat India by three wickets in the third ODI of the five-match series here at John Davies Oval, Queenstown on Friday.

With this win, New Zealand has gained an unassailable 3-0 lead in the ongoing five-match series. The fourth ODI will be played at the same venue on Tuesday. This chase of 280 is the second-highest chase recorded in the history of women’s ODIs. Chasing 280, New Zealand got off to a horrendous start as the side lost Sophie Devine (0) and Suzie Bates (5) with just 14 runs on the board and this brought Amelia Kerr and Amy Satterthwaite at the crease. The duo revived the innings for the hosts. The 103-run stand for the third wicket finally came to an end in the 24th over as Goswami dismissed Satterthwaite (59), with the White Ferns still 163 runs away from the target.
Sneh Rana got the crucial wicket of Amelia Kerr (67) in the 31st over, reducing New Zealand to 152/4, with the hosts still 128 runs away from the target. Renuka Singh then got her maiden ODI wicket in the 34th over as she sent Maddy Green (24) back to the hut and this left the hosts in a spot of bother.
Lauren Down and Katey Martin got together at the crease and the duo led White Ferns’ fightback in the contest. Both batters stitched together a partnership of 76 runs for the seventh wicket but with New Zealand 33 runs away from the target, the hosts lost the wicket of Martin (35).
Down brought up her half-century in the 47th over of the innings and in the last three overs, New Zealand needed 23 runs to win. In the end, Down (64*) and Frances Mackay (17*) ensured that New Zealand took a 3-0 lead in the series.
India have set New Zealand a target of 280 in Queenstown, largely thanks to the opening stand from Sabbhineni Meghana and Shafali Verma.

Earlier Sabbhineni Meghna (61 of 41 balls) & Shafali Verma (51 of 47 balls) put up a brilliant opening wicket stand of 100 to give India rollicking start.
Harmanpreet Kaur again failed with the bat as she was dismissed for just 13. Captain Mithali Raj also could not do much as she got out 23 of 33 balls.

India need a major boost ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, which is just a little over two weeks away. That boost could come in form of Smriti Mandhana, Renuka Singh and Meghana Singh, who are out of extended quarantine. With two losses in two ODIs, this will be their final chance to stay alive in the five-match series.
More importantly, the World Cup is just around the corner, and India will need to get a few wins under the belt before the big event. To that end, there are encouraging signs. They lost the first ODI comprehensively, but there was a definite improvement in the second, with the batting firing.
Captain Mithali Raj has continued her consistent run of form, but lack of runs from vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been a cause of concern for a while. Kaur has hit only one fifty in the last two years.

With no word yet on Richa Ghosh’s ankle injury, Taniya Bhatia will take up wicket-keeping duties. However, Ghosh’s absence will weaken the batting unit further.Bowling wise, India have struggled to pick up wickets in the middle overs. With Renuka Singh and Meghana Singh back in the mix, and the veteran Jhulan Goswami available for selection, India have plenty of options to choose from.
The hosts, on the other hand, have done everything right so far. Amelia Kerr looks well-settled at No.3, Lea Tahuhu has got a promotion up the order, and their batting looks strong and assured.
Jess Kerr has impressed with the new ball, and has been well-supported by rest of the attack. With their batting doing half the job, the bowling attack’s major contribution has been to contain the run-flow and take crucial wickets, which they have done admirably.
