With New Zealand trailing by a 0-1 margin, they had to win the second Test to avoid series defeat. Things did not look as bright on the third day of the Test for Kiwis after getting to just 209. However, in the second innings, the hosts showed a lot of character to set things up nicely. On the fifth day, England needed over 180 runs to win.

The hosts’ bowlers struck early by removing the top order, before Joe Root and Ben Stokes led the fightback. Neil Wagner struck for the Kiwis by dismissing Stokes and Root and that led to England’s collapse. This loss was the only second loss for Ben Stokes as captain in the 12 Test matches that he has led.
