Earlier, New Zealand were dealt a blow when Aaron Finch won the toss and opted to bowl first. With an unfavourable first-batting record at the Dubai International Stadium, New Zealand needed to post at least 30 runs over par to be safe.

But New Zealand lost opener, Daryl Mitchell, inside the powerplay and then Martin Guptill in the 12th over with score reading only 78. They needed their captain to step up and he did that, targeting the Aussie spinners. His 85 off 48 balls steadied New Zealand and put them on the path of a big score in the final.
