His throws have been quite impressive as well. He missed the 90m mark by just six cms, and has throws of 86.69m and 89.30m. These are impressive considering his entire focus this season has been at the Worlds. With no Asian Games scheduled this year, he is expected to go full tilt for gold in Oregon.

Gold is also possible, but it depends on the performance of other throwers. If it is below the 90m mark, Chopra, who is know for his consistency, should walk away with the yellow metal hanging around his neck.

Major competitors for gold and their season best

  • Neeraj Chopra – best throw of 89.94 in June
  • Anderson Peters – best throw of 93.07 in May
  • Jakub Vadlejch – best throw of 90.88 in May
  • Oliver Helander – best throw of 89.83 in June
  • Julian Webber – best throw of 89.54 in June
  • Andreas Hoffmann – best throw of 87.32 in June

There is great competition for medal this time around though. Without a shadow of doubt, it is Anderson Peters, who is the man to beat. He has been in impeccable form, defeating Chopra for gold in the last Diamond League meet at Stockholm meet. Peters has been consistently throwing the spear beyond the 90m mark, which makes him straightaway a gold medal contender.

Besides Peters, Jakub Vadlejch has been another javelin thrower, who has it in him to clinch gold. His best throw this season has been 90.88 in May. Though Johannes Vetter is missing out with an injury, there is no dearth of top throwers with the likes of Oliver Helander and Julian Webber no present in Oregon to make up the numbers.
