Despite a good challenge from the South Africans, India managed to clinch a commendable 2-0 victory. Savita Punia will be happy to clinch a clean-sheet. Also with this game, India addressed its penalty corner issue. In their last two league matches, the Women in Blue failed to convert even one penalty corner opportunity into a goal. In this game, both their goals came off penalty corners.
Grace Ekka converted a penalty corner with a brilliant drag flick in the first quarter, while Gurjit Kaur finished things off in style after multiple attempts in the final quarter.
South Africa played a high-pressing game and challenged the Indians right from the start. Soon the Indians too started attacking and trie to penetrate into the D. They had few shots at the goal but in the end was rewarded with a Penalty corner opportunity at the 14th minute. Deep Grace Ekka converted it beautifully to put India in the lead.
In the second quarter, India was on the front foot. Navneet Kaur had two shots at the goal back-to-back but the South African goal-keeper did good work in front of the post. India continued to search for goal-scoring opportunities and even got one penalty corner. This time, Gurjit Kaur failed to score as the first half came to an end.
In the third quarter too both the teams continued their attacking display. Towards the end of the quarter, India gained a penalty shot opportunity. However goalkeeper Van Deventer judged the shot perfectly from Suseela and dived to her left to deny a goal-scoring chance for India. The Women in Blue continued their fight in the final quarter and finally they earned one penalty corner opportunity and after multiple attempts, Gurjit Kaur found the net to help India win the contest 2-0.
