Tamil Nadu fans expressed their disapproval over Sethupathi’s choice to play Muralitharan in the film. The reason for their discontent was due to Muralitharan’s Indian Tamil origin and his alleged support for the Lankan government during the 26-year civil war that involved the LTTE. Muttiah Muralitharan hails from Kandy, Sri Lanka. His comments in support of the SriLankan government sparked controversy and resistance to Sethupathi. Many celebrities and political groups asked Vijay Sethupathi to turn down the role. After many people opposed Sethupathi playing his biopic 800, the SriLankan cricketer issued a statement in 2020.

Muralitharan issued a statement in Tamil, which translates as “I understand that Vijay Sethupathi is facing a lot of pressure from a few people. I do not want a celebrated actor like him facing trouble because of people who misunderstood me. I do not want Vijay Sethupathi to face any problem in future. Hence, I am asking him to opt out of this biopic.”
Now, the makers of the film have found a new face to play the role of Murali in his biopic. The role will now be played by Madhur Mittal, known for his role in the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The title of the film ‘800’ is based on the number of test wickets taken by the SriLankan spinner.
The creators of the film took to Twitter and shared a photo of Madhur Mittal in character as Muralitharan, while announcing the movie as the untold story of #MuthiahMuralidaran.

Madhur Mittal, who gained recognition for his portrayal of Salim Malik in the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”, is a well-known actor in India. The 32-year-old has also appeared in several successful Hindi television shows such as “Shaka Laka Boom Boom” and “Kasauti Zindagi Ki”, among others.
