Most SIXES in Test: NZ vs ENG – England captain Ben Stokes surpassed coach Brendon McCullum to become the undisputed leader in sixes hit in Test cricket. Stokes hit his 108th career six as he hooked seamer Scott Kuggeleijn over fine leg halfway through the third day of the opening Test match against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. Boundary fielder Neil Wagner gave Stokes a respite, allowing him to make it 109 sixes with the subsequent delivery after catching the shot but losing his balance and placing his foot on the rope. Shortly after Stokes was out for 31, England’s second innings was at score of 293-7 and a 312-run lead.
In comparison to McCullum, who scored 107 sixes in 176 innings across 101 Tests, it Stokes 90 Tests and 164 innings to attain his total. Stokes appears to be in line to keep the record for a while as veteran New Zealand captain Tim Southee, who has 76 sixes, is the closest active player to his total.
The only other player with 100 test sixes is Australia’s Adam Gilchrist, who amassed them over the course of 136 innings and 96 games, at a rate of 0.73 per knock. Chris Cairns, who ranks second among New Zealanders for most test sixes, hit 87 of them in just 62 games and 104 innings, a stunning rate of 0.84.
