Dustin Poirier was knocked out in the second round by Justin Gaethje, who then celebrated by performing a backflip off the cage. The victory astonished the UFC community.
Gaethje was knocked out by Poirier in the final round of the Fight of the Year in 2018, but in the intervening five years, he has significantly grown as a fighter and earned the UFC’s BMF title as the “Baddest Mother F***er” in the organisation.
Although Poirier rocked Gaethje with a straight blow that left the eventual victor ferociously blinking and wounded, as well as later bleeding from a gash above that left eye, Gaethje, who is now 25-4, landed low kicks frequently in a close first round.

Despite being shaken, Gaethje maintained his composure and made the cleaner shots in the opening round. The 34-year-old Gaethje, though, launched his first head kick of the fight barely one minute into the second round. His right leg followed a straight right hand and connected with Poirier flush on the side of the head.
Poirier, the second-ranked UFC championship contender, collapsed to the octagon floor as referee Herb Dean jumped in to stop the fight.
Apart from the fighters, the other man who deserves applause for his active participation in the bout is the referee Herb Dean.
Spinnin Backfist also posted the very moment on their Twitter account, captioning the video clip “Herb Dean worked hard on that slide”.
The way the referee entered the space to separate the fighters after the KO with a smooth elbow drop led the MMA fans to notice it as they commented “Yeah was a nice elbow drop”.
