According to reports, Messi was even set to sign a £245 million contract with Al-Hilal, the arch-rivals of Al-Nassr, after learning that his father Jorge may be in Riyadh.

Messi and an SPL side are not currently in talks, according to Ibrahim Alkassim, General Secretary of the Saudi Football Federation, who also stated that the Saudis would love to see the 35-year-old play in the league in the future.

He told Marca: ‘At the moment we do not know anything about a possible Lionel Messi arrival, although I do not hide that, as Saudi Federation, we would like to have him one day in the domestic league.’

‘The idea of the Federation is always to improve our football, and of course we would like to see Cristiano and Messi in the same league again, but the truth is that we don’t know anything now.’

Other teams that have been mentioned as potential destinations for Messi include his hometown club Barcelona and MLS team Inter Miami. The two sides are currently finalising the terms of their contract after receiving an offer from the French club; PSG is expected to make the announcement of his renewal soon. A big factor in Messi’s decision to sign a new contract was his desire to add to his four Champions League titles from his time at Barcelona.
