Confidence was high after a 4-0 mauling of Liverpool earlier in the week, yet it was Melbourne City who took an early lead thanks to a well-worked team goal that started from a goal kick.
The move went down United’s left, with Luke Shaw were caught out of position and Victor Lindelöf and Harry Maguire off the pace, leaving Melbourne’s Chris Ikonomidis with an easy tap-in.

Erik ten Hag looked to be pushing both Maguire and Lindlöf higher up the pitch when his side were in attack, and testing this new approach inevitably left them vulnerable at times.
United sprang into action just before half-time, as Scott McTominay – who had already seen two shots blocked – found the breakthrough saw his shot take a huge deflection and hit the back of the net.
The second came just two minutes later, courtesy of Anthony Martial from close range after some good work from Diogo Dalot in the build-up.
