- Medvedev finished 2021 on a high by winning the Us Open, which was his maiden Grand Slam title. He then started the year in the ATP Cup, taking Russia to the semi-finals.
- He entered the Australian open as the second seed and reached the finals, where he suffered a heart-breaking fifth set defeat at the hands of Rafael Nadal.
- He then played the Mexican Open, wher he went down once again to Nadal in the semi-finals, but following Novak Djokovic’s exit in the quarter-final of the Dubai Open, Medvedev reached the number 1 spot in the World rankings.
- Meanwhile, Tomas Machac started the year by winning the Traralgon ATP Challenger title.
- He then qualified for the main round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career and won his first Grand Slam match by defeating Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the first round.
- He made a second round exit after losing to USA’s Maxime Cressy. He then reached until the quarter-finals of the ATP Challenger event in Forli, Italy.
- He played the qualifiers in the Indian Wells Masters and reached the main draw. In the first round, he defeated Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 7-5.
Medvedev vs Machac Head-to-Head Record: Both the players will face each other for the first time in their career. Given his current form and ranking, Medvedev is the overwhelming favourite in the contest and is expected to sail past his opponent quite comfortably.
