Kylian Mbappe scored twice in two minutes late in the game, including a penalty in the 80th minute, to rescue a 2-2 draw with Argentina after 90 minutes and force extra time in Sunday’s World Cup final. The Argentines had struck twice in the first half, through captain Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria, and were in perfect control until Mbappe ignited a remarkable comeback for France, which had appeared toothless for much of the game.

Mbappe scored a stunning penalty goal. Martinez dove correctly and made minor touch with the ball, but not enough to prevent it from nestling in the bottom left corner. Coman won the ball back on the midway line moments later, and France promptly switched it to the left side. Mbappe nodded it down to Thuram, and when it returned to him, he struck the volley across goal. Argentina’s goalie Martinez got a hand to it again, but he couldn’t stop it from nestling in the corner.
In the extra time, Argentina knocked it through them again, and France were all over the place at the back. Lautaro Martinez sent a shot across goal, which keeper Lloris parried. Messi, who was lurking just front of him, tapped it in. It was cleared from behind the line by Upamecano. The goal stood after a quick VAR assessment for offside. However the victory was short lived.
Mbappe equalised again and went on to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final. He kept his eyes on Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and knocked him out. Mbappe then shot it in the opposite direction. Mbappe will be disappointed with the Golden Boot after France was defeated on penalties by Argentina. After extra time, the game ended 3-3, with the Albiceleste winning the shootout 4-2.
