Mary Kom’s husband K Onkholer set to contest in Manipur polls – K Onkholer, the husband of India’s champion boxer Mary Kom, has signalled his intentions to contest in the upcoming elections. Onkholer will be contesting from the Saikot Assembly constituency in Churachandpur district. The decision was made on Saturday, and he revealed that it was taken with consultation from his wife Mary Kom, who incidentally is a sitting Rajya Sabha MP.

As per multiple reports, K Onkholer, the husband of six-time World Champion Mary Kom will be contesting in the upcoming Manipur elections. The announcement was officially made during a public meeting held at Samulamlan village, with church leaders, village chiefs, social workers, women and youth leaders of Saikot constituency in attendance. The gathering also organised a blessing ceremony for Onkholer.

Onkholer said that he decided to enter the fray after witnessing the backwardness of his constituency and hopes to bring about change. “There is a lot to be done. Many developmental activities are required to be taken up for the welfare of the people of my constituency,” said Onkholer as quoted by the Times of India.

Onkholer said that the decision was taken in consultation with his wife, who is a Rajya Sabha MP. Onkholer and Mary Kom have been married for 16 years and she had paid rich tributes to her husband on several occasions. “Because of his constant encouragement and support, I am able to achieve and be who I am today. There is no doubt that it was a difficult path, managing sports and family, but he makes things simple for me,” she had said as per TOI.
Reports suggest that Onkholer is eyeing a BJP ticket, but will contest an Independent candidate should he not get one. Mary Kom’s husband will be up against senior Congress leader T N Haokip, who is also the sitting MLA of the constituency. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Manipur had announced that the Assembly election of the state is likely to be held in the first quarter of 2022.
