Ten Hag is in the hunt for a striker as a cover for Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. While Rashford has been scoring important goals for the club, Martial has been unable to complete the full 90 minutes. Weghorst was signed by Burnley from Wolfsburg on Transfer Deadline Day in January 2022 on a three-and-half-year deal.

The Dutch striker struggled to score goals for the Clarets and was loaned out to Besiktas last summer. While Weghorst remains on loan at Besiktas his move to Manchester United will only be possible if the Istanbul outfit and the Championship club agrees to cut short his loan move.

Ten Hag while talking about bringing in a new striker said, “There is a reason. It is because he (Martial) cannot manage the load. This is why we are looking for another striker. It is not about us not relying on him. His physical load is not, at this moment, so high that he can play every third day a game of 90 minutes. So I have to manage that together with him”.

Burnley’s deal with Besiktas, which has a €10 million (£9m/$11m) purchase option, does not include a recall clause. Besiktas also does not want to leave the striker. Manager of the Turkish outfit Senol Gunes had also cleared his stand on the Dutch striker. He said “Weghorst is an important player for us. It is not enough to say goodbye to the audience.
