Last week Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his company INEOS expressed the desire to buy Manchester United as the current owners, i.e Glazers family are reportedly looking for a way out of the club. INEOS is a chemical company that is expected to send its official bid to buy Manchester United.

However, this move has not been taken well by environmentalists. They are of the opinion that the Chemical company is eyeing to clear its image by buying the big football club. INEOS has been blamed for polluting the planet.

A Greenpeace UK spokesperson said: “Accepting this bid would be an awful own goal for Manchester United. Petrochemicals giant INEOS is just the latest fossil fuel company trying to use a popular sport to distract from their climate-wrecking business. With interests in oil and gas, plastics and agrichemicals, INEOS has a hat-trick of environmental harms to its name. They are top of the table for plastic production in the UK and are one of the loudest voices in favour of fracking.”

“Manchester United should really question whether polluting their image and enabling blatant sportswashing is really worth the dirty money they would get.”

When the Glazers first purchased the club, they took out a loan to do so, and that debt is now in the name of the Football Club. This means that anyone interested in purchasing the club will have to either acquire the club on its balance sheet or pay out the obligations upon acquiring the club. United has spent more than £1.1 billion servicing the Glazers’ leveraged takeover in 2005, while the Americans have collected approximately £465 million in share sales and the club’s gross debt remains staggeringly high at £680 million.

Whoever the new owner is will also have to decide what to do with Old Trafford, after the club was presented with a number of stadium extension alternatives, including the demolition of the stadium and the construction of a new home. However, the position is now effectively frozen, with any future expansion likely to be controlled by new owners.
