Three days after doing the same in a 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal, United boss Erik ten Hag fielded a potent cup squad once more. Once again, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, and Marcus Rashford were all mentioned in the unexpected starting lineup.
Even though the visiting Reading club was in the bottom half of the Championship and included players with Premier League experience like Carroll, Jeff Hendrick, and Junior Hoilett, it looked concerning. However, Reading managed to contain the hosts for the first 45 minutes.

Despite having 14 attempts in the first half—including close misses from Antony and Wout Weghorst—United was unable to break the score against a squad that like to stay compact behind the ball.
After 35 minutes, they believed they had scored the first goal, but a VAR review determined it was offside. While Weghorst was ruled to be offside in the buildup after Reading’s touch on the ball before it reached him was deemed not to be an intentional play, Rashford, who was going for a club-record 10th consecutive home game with a goal, headed the ball over the line from close range.
United experienced a scare at the other end just before the half. Tyrell Malacia chested down a cross at the back post without realising Hoilett was behind him, allowing the Canadian international to slither in and get a shot at goal that required a quick reaction save from David de Gea.

United took just nine minutes into the second half to ultimately score, perhaps encouraged by that escape or some stern words from Ten Hag at the intermission. All Brazilian players contributed to the goal, which Casemiro finished with a deft chip over Joe Lumley in the Reading goal after Antony provided a superbly weighted through pass.
The game was virtually over as a contest four minutes later. High on confidence, Casemiro attempted to beat Lumley with a long range effort that received the tiniest of deflections from defender Thomas Holmes.
The Old Trafford supporters cheered when they saw Carroll, a former Liverpool rival, trudging down the tunnel 25 minutes early after he went in late on Casemiro to receive a second yellow card, which left little space for protest.
Fred, who was introduced as Ten Hag made substitutions in the second half, expertly flicked behind his back to direct Fernandes’ low cross into the net while Reading was still suffering from that most recent setback, sealing United’s passage to the round of 16.
