Federer, who is regarded as one of the greatest icons of the sport, announced his decision to retire from the sport on Thursday through a voice note that was uploaded on his Twitter account. In it he said, “The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more Tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slam or on the Tour.”

At the Laver Cup, he is set to reunite with the other members of the “Big Four” – Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray and for the first time all the four players are scheduled to play together in the Laver Cup. While the Tennis fans around the world are eager to witness Federer for one last time, his fitness coach’s words have casted a doubt over his participation.

Speaking to Blick in an interview, Paganini, who is associated with Federer for the last 22 years was asked whether he thinks the Swiss legend will be able to play the Laver Cup. For that he replied, “He will probably decided that at the last moment.” He further added, “He’s trained to have as much information as possible, whether it’s a good idea or not. I am excited.”

Roger Federer has been out of action for more than a year since the Wimbledon 2021 as he underwent a third surgery on his knee and has still been recovering from it. It remains to be seen whether the 41-year old is fit enough to make return and play competitive Tennis.

In an earlier interview to Blick, Federer’s long-time coach Severin Luthi also told that notjng is definite on his current form. He however saud, “I trained with him last week. We will be back on the pitch next week. The goal is for him to be able to play something. Whether singles or doubles is not clear.”

Going with this, one can expect Federer to play only in the doubles at the Laver Cup. He can partner with his arch-rival Rafael Nadal for the second-time in the doubles after they partnered in the inaugural edition of the Laver Cup in 2017. Meanwhile, Laver Cup has also named Matteo Berrettini as an alternate player in the squad, which suggests that he might fill in Federer’s spot in the singles.
