LaLiga News: Lionel Messi signs five year deal with FC BarcelonaAccording to DailyMail, FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi have finally agreed on the terms of the club captain’s new contract. The Argentine forward has put pen on paper and signed the new deal which will keep him at Camp Nou for the upcoming seasons.

Messi is said to have agreed upon a new five-year deal and remain associated with FC Barcelona until 2026. The new deal also means that the club captain will be at the club till he is nearly 40 years old.

The contract negotiations were said to be finalized on Monday and have now been closed with both parties reaching an agreement. His previous contract with FC Barcelona expired in June 2021 and saw the 34-year-old remain a free agent for almost over a month.

He is on holiday in Ibiza alongside former Barca players Luis Suarez and Cesc Fabregas while his father Jorge finalizes the deal. The Barca captain is also said to miss out on the clubs’ preseason and wait till the contract is signed..

Lionel Messi’s contract will see him take a 50 percent pay cut due to the clubs’ poor financial position. Messi, who earlier earned over £425million in his previous four years at FC Barcelona will now pocket only £250,000 every week for the next five years.

Despite agreeing upon the deal and finalizing the contract, FC Barcelona still has a number of issues to sort out. Club president Joan Laporta will have to find a way to reduce the wage bill so Messi can be registered with LaLiga once again.

FC Barcelona will have to negotiate wage deferrals that could see Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba slash their wages by nearly 40 percent in order to balance the teams’ finances. Players like Miralem Pjanic, Samuel Umtiti, and Martin Braithwaite could also be on their way out in order to ease some pressure off the club’s wage bill.
