Those who witnessed the altercation between the two World Cup-winning players following Monday night’s IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants have differing opinions.
The ‘Gentlemen’s Game’ devotees believed it might have been avoided, while some regarded it to be juvenile. A few others enjoyed the spice and the idea of heated rivalry.
A witness who was present in one of the team’s dugouts gave PTI a thorough account of what transpired.
“You saw on TV that Mayers and Virat were walking side by side for a few metres post match. Mayers asked Kohli why was he constantly abusing them and Virat, in turn, questioned why was he (Mayers) ‘staring’ at him? Before that (Amit) Mishra had complained to umpire about Virat constantly abusing Naveen (ul-Haq), who is a No. 10 batter,” the eyewitness told PTI.
Gautam Gambhir intervened after spotting Mayers and Kohli arguing and drew the West Indian apart. The eyewitness then divulges the precise words that Kohli and Gambhir spoke during the argument.
“Gautam, sensing that things could turn ugly, pulled Mayers and told him not to have a conversation, when Virat made a comment. The heated exchange that followed seemed a bit juvenile,” he said.
“Gautam asked ‘Kya bol raha hain bol’(What were you saying?) and Virat replied, ‘Maine aapko kuch bola hi naahin, aap kyon ghus rahein ho’ (Why are you coming in between when I haven’t told you anything).
Kohli and Gambhir punished
In a video that RCB uploaded to YouTube, Kohli is heard saying, “You got to take it, otherwise don’t give it.”
The duo have been charged with their whole match fees, despite the fact that no one is aware of the precise mechanism the BCCI uses to decide a mentor’s punishment.
