With no return date set for Shreyas Iyer, Kolkata Knight Riders have less than a week to name their stand-in skipper for IPL 2023. The tournament kicks off on March 31 and KKR is without a skipper. Shreyas while not ruled out of the tournament entirely, will miss the initial games. He suffered a back injury and is currently at home resting. While the surgery was suggested by both BCCI and NCA, Shreyas decided to ‘wait and watch’ hopeful of featuring in the IPL.
In his absence, Kolkata Knight Riders will need to appoint a new captain. Sunil Narine is the current front runner as per multiple reports. Having spent 11 seasons with KKR, Narine will take over the mantle on an interim basis until Shreyas can resume his duties.
KKR Captaincy Conundrum

Narine incidentally led KKR’s sister franchise Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the IlT20. It did not work out well, with the franchise finishing at the bottom of the table, with just 1 win in 10 games. Despite the dismal record, KKR are set to trust the West Indian all-rounder given his experience.
Nitish Rana was also in consideration but his limited leadership and international experience ruled against his favour. Furthermore, he suffered a left ankle injury on Thursday at Eden Gardens during a practice session, making it KKR’s third prominent injury of the offseason. The seriousness of the injury is undetermined, he is expected to feature in their first game of the season.
